A couple weeks ago I said for my next talk at Crossroads I was going to focus on Luke 18.18-30. Well there has been a change in plans. Yesterday I made the decision to talk about a verse in 1 Peter that may not be that popular.
7 Husbands, likewise, submit by living with your wife in ways that honor her, knowing that she is the weaker partner. Honor her all the more, as she is also a coheir of the gracious care of life. Do this so that your prayers won’t be hindered. – 1 Peter 3.7 CEB
I’m with Peter through the whole “living with your wife in ways that honor her” but “knowing that she is the weaker partner” is where I get hung up.
Have you met my wife?
When I think of adjectives to describe her, “weaker” isn’t one that comes to mind. For the love of Peter (hehe), she’s on a roller derby team. She beats up other people for fun!
In my talk, I plan to unpack what Peter meant by this but I will focus the majority of the conversation on what Peter was referring to when he said, “Husbands, likewise…” Other translations say, “Husbands, in the same way…”
In the same way as what?
I believe the answer to this question is key for husbands to apply this passage in a way that honors their wives as aposed to misusing the words “weaker partner”.
The reason I’m changing my topic is too long to go into now. Lets just say I felt the Spirit was leading me towards an area all husbands need help in; encouraging them to better honor their wives (myself included).
